Expert Perspectives: What’s New with Healthcare Design Guidelines & Building Codes

As building and design guidelines become codified with the International Green Construction Code (IgCC), there is a major re-positioning happening—not only in the healthcare sector, but in other sectors, as well. Some states have already adopted the IgCC with an anticipation of its completion in March 2012, although one proposed alternative path of compliance is the ASHRAE 189.1 Standard for the Design of High-Performance, Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings

Concurrently, the ASHRAE 189.2 Standard for Design, Construction and Operation of Sustainable High Performance Health Care Facilities is being developed for anticipated completion in 2012. The goal is for this to also become an alternative compliance path within the IgCC.

For the 2014 cycle of the Guidelines for Design and Construction of Health Care Facilities, developed by the Facilities Guidelines Institute, an initiative is underway to include revised minimal standards for sustainability, using 189.2 for background. A Health Guidelines Revision Committee (HGRC)—made up of all types of healthcare experts, including nurses, physicians, designers, architects, engineers, infection control experts, researchers, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs), and other stakeholders—is leading that effort. The next meeting of the HGRC will take place in Texas in the end of January, during which time it will vote on proposals that will then be posted for public comment. Healthcare professionals are encouraged to comment because the Guidelines for Design and Construction of Health Care Facilities are used by over 40 states as code for healthcare settings. The 2014 cycle will also include two volumes: one focused on acute and ambulatory care, and the other focused on residential healthcare, support, and related facilities.

The new LEED® 2012 BD+C now includes healthcare, effectively replacing LEED-HC, and is beginning to raise the bar and look at the application of life cycle analysis for project development and product selection.

The Green Building Initiative™ has developed a new Green Globes® Continual Improvement for Existing Buildings (CIEB) program for healthcare. This is a web-enabled interactive green building design tool that incorporates an integrated project management approach and is available for third-party certification. This tool was developed after the completion of pilot assessments on 21 Veterans’ Affairs (VA) hospitals in 2009. The tool is currently being used for existing VA hospitals across the country and is now also available for existing private sector hospitals.

Within the senior living marketplace, the new Senior Living Sustainability Guide® includes information for the entire facility development process, including pre-development, the dimensions of organization, resident, operations, and the physical setting within appropriate social-cultural context. In addition, continual improvement processes are discussed, acknowledging that sustainability is a continual process based upon benchmarks, not a single point in time.

Purpose-driven Profits: Local Businesses Give Back with Every Sale

Chances are that if you drank a cup of coffee recently at the Bean Hollow Cafe in Ellicott City you sipped that steaming brew from a mug made by Greenbridge Pottery in Dayton.

It feels good to support a local business or two. What feels even better is knowing that every time a mug or a plate or a yarn bowl is purchased directly from Greenbridge Pottery, a portion of the sale helps others in our community and around the world. It’s called social enterprise. “We were making pottery to make ourselves and our customers happy by trying to make something useful and beautiful. Now it changes how we think about our work, because we know we’re doing something bigger than ourselves,” says Becky Moy Behre, who along with her husband, Evan, has been making nature-inspired pottery in a barn in western Howard County for 25 years (read more).

Closed Cell Foam Seals and Strengthens Historic Home

Carroll Insulation of Eldersburg, Maryland recently teamed with JSR Associates, a Maryland architectural firm and contractor Jeremiah Fivel to renovate an historic home in Ellicott City, Maryland. The project began as siding repair on the 1920’s era home. Like many repair jobs, this one soon morphed into a restoration which included removing batt and blown fiberglass and replacing an entire wall of clapboards. Since the entire wall would be exposed from the outside, homeowner and architect Jane Rohde saw an opportunity to improve the structural integrity and energy efficiency of her home. Close coordination between the GC and insulation contractor was essential. The entire structure was tented with tarps and plastic in preparation for foam application. It is critical to encapsulate the entire work area as air born spray foam can travel hundreds of feet in the wind before it finds a place to land. Weather forecasts were consulted, the date was scheduled and pieces fell into place. Applicators used a cherry picker to access the side of the building, completing the 1800bf spray project in a only few hours. The following day clapboards were replaced. 2” of BASF Comfort Foam, 2# closed cell foam was selected to seal and insulate the structure. Added benefits included significant increase to the structural rigidity of the wall, a 1 perm rating for moisture penetration, improved indoor air quality and the peace of mind that comes with knowing that a permanent and energy efficient solution is hidden beneath the historically accurate and approved siding.

April 28, 2011 at 1 PM: Webinar on Senior Living Sustainability

IIDA: International Interior Design Association

The IIDA will feature Jane Rohde on the four dimensions of The Senior Living Sustainability Guide™: (1) Resident, (2) Organization, (3) Operations, and (4) Physical Setting. The goal of the guide is not to begin with the built environment, but to establish the desired resident outcomes. The process for creating a truly sustainable project includes the identification and fulfillment of those resident experiential desires first and foremost, the development of organization structure, identifying all of the operation functions, and creating a physical environment that supports the other three dimensions. Sustainability is a continual process with necessary periodic benchmarking to successfully sustain a senior living setting over time. Register now.

2010 Community Service Award

At The Children’s Home 2010 Annual Meeting, Lauren Erickson, JSR’s Office Manager & Healing Arts Specialist, was recognized and awarded with the 2010 Community Service Award by the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Andre Cooper for her volunteer work in the Home’s Art for Cash program. Lauren has dedicated many hours to the establishment of Perspectives Gallery that features work completed by the residents living at The Children’s Home. Arts in Fusion, the first exhibition in Perspectives Gallery utilized sustainability (recycle & reuse) as the theme. Residents of The Children’s Home utilized recycled glass mineral water bottles to make vases and bells, jewelry, and magnets expanding to large scale projects like mosaics, graffiti art, mixed paint and mud media, and “rapping” rocks. Lauren provided concepts for art projects completed both at the Gallery, as well as at The Home on Saturdays. Lauren was key in the successful opening of the Gallery and maintained the on-going exhibition; raising money for the Art for Cash program. Her success continues with Through the Looking Lens: A Photography Exhibit (PDF) opening on August 27, 2010 from 6:30 – 10:00 pm.
