Healthcare Design: Dr. Maskeroni's Office
Architect and Interior Designer
After spending 22 years in the Navy as an orthodontist,
Dr. Maskeroni wanted to house his private practice
in a low-stress setting that would reflect his personality
and interests, and make his teenage clients feel
comfortable.
JSR and Dr. Maskeroni brainstormed together, ultimately
selecting a water theme. The theme appealed to
children and teens, while also reflecting the clients
naval background and the offices mid-Atlantic
location.
Creating a stress-reducing
environment for patients was a priority, so JSR looked
across industry lines to the
elder care market for calming elements that were both
creative and therapeutic. One solution was found
in bubble tubes
that had proved soothing for Alzheimers patients.
The tubes were installed throughout the aquarium-themed
ortho bays, and a mural of the underwater world decorated
one large wall.
By incorporating these and other decorative but
functional elements, JSR transformed an ordinary
office into a
multi-sensory experience. According to Dr. Maskeroni, My
patients come into my office and dont want
to leave."
