Senior Living: Erickson Retirement Communities

Vice President of Design

Before starting JSR Associates, Jane Rohde served as vice president of design for a leading developer of retirement communities. She helped design three of the most popular life care communities in the country: Charlestown Retirement Community, Oak Crest Village, and Henry Ford Village.

To design a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) on the scale of the Erickson facilities was, in essence, to design a small town.

Each community needed enough apartments—with varying floor plans—to house 1000–2500 residents. There was also a full complement of support buildings, including multiple dining areas, worship space, computer room, gift shop, fitness center, and staff offices.

Jane’s department was responsible for integrating operational and resident needs as it oversaw everything from architectural review to contracts and procurements.

When Charlestown—the largest CCRC in the country—was completed, it served as a living model for future projects, enabling the design team to continually refine the physical environment and improve the quality of life for staff and residents.
