To design a continuing care retirement community
(CCRC) on the scale of the Erickson facilities was,
in essence, to design a small town.
Each community needed enough apartmentswith
varying floor plansto house 10002500
residents. There was also a full complement of
support buildings, including multiple dining areas,
worship
space, computer room, gift shop, fitness center,
and staff offices.
Janes department was responsible for integrating
operational and resident needs as it oversaw everything
from architectural review to contracts and procurements.
When Charlestownthe largest CCRC in the countrywas
completed, it served as a living model for future
projects, enabling the design team to continually
refine the physical environment and improve the quality
of life for staff and residents.
