Jane Rohde champions a global cultural shift toward deinstitutionalized senior living facilities through her consulting, research, and advocacy, providing services for non-profit and for-profit developers, government agencies, as well as senior living and care providers. She also educates providers, regulators, and peers on senior living trends, programming, and design that supports and improves the lives of elders, and speaks internationally on these topics plus evidence-based design and sustainability.

Rohde sits on the Environmental Standards Council, part of The Center for Health Design, and is the former AAHID board of regents vice president. She played a significant role in the creation of the Facility Guidelines Institute’s Guidelines for Design and Construction of Residential Health, Care, and Support Facilities, covering the licensing of long-term care and related facility types. She founded and chairs the Senior Living Sustainability Guide committee, a group of volunteers that created a sustainability guide for senior living projects, which has been used in more than 10 countries. That includes China, where the guide was consulted in the creation of China Senior Care, the first residential senior care facility in that country that focuses on skilled nursing and adult day care.

The evolution of communities integrating person-centered care has significant implications for the design and construction of residential communities. One of the barriers to creating the person-centered built environment has been outdated or obsolete regulations, standards, and codes. The Facilities Guidelines Institute (FGI) has recently released a new set of minimum standards for design and construction of a wide range of person-centered/home-like long-term residential care and support facilities. Hear about this exciting new reference and the significant new standards, which will have an important impact on future long-term community design.
